Pea straw bales for use as garden mulch

The garden benefits from pea straw mulch in the following ways:

  • Addition of nutrients

  • Improvement of soil structure

  • Water conservation

  • Suppressed weed germination

The bales themselves, commonly known as “small square bales” are approximately 32" x 18" x 12" Coverage depends on how you lay it down; some gardeners like to pull the bale apart and lay the ‘biscuits’ out like paving slabs. This method will cover approximately 3 -4m₂ of bare earth. Others like to pull the biscuits apart to create a thinner layer of mulch and make it easier to place around established plants. Obviously this will make a bale go further.
