It's frustrating for everyone but there you have it. We are a small agriculture based business in a rural setting and have been battling hard on all fronts to get this business to where it ought to be, to reach its potential.
The demand for pea straw is high and has grown since COVID struck and people have turned to gardening. Yet circumstances are such that we cannot meet that demand. Years of drought have taken their toll on the supply of pea straw. We aren't farmers, so rely on others to put the crop in and hope every year for a decent year which has not been forthcoming.
Our government tells you to support small business but we don't meet any criteria for them to support us, and Banks don't want to know us either. Our rural population is shrinking and there is a drought of skilled seasonal workers. It's just the two of us here, Alex managing the home and office and Mick doing absolutely everything else. Spring time is excessively busy and the demand placed on us is huge. It is very stressful.
We need skilled people to help out at this time of year whether in the paddock or driving the truck for delivering. We had someone lined up only to be let down at the last minute. It's seemingly impossible to get most city folk to understand just what we are up against out here. The distances we travel, the hours we have to keep, the flow of the seasons.
We have finally been forced to concede defeat with our business in Perth.
To our loyal customers who have been with us from the start, we thank you for your support over the years. We have enjoyed getting to know you.
